"I am passionate about photography. Whether I am venturing into the wilderness or photographing a family reunion, photography allows me the possibility of creatively capturing moments in time."

During my senior year of high school, I decided to conduct an in-depth study of digital photography for my senior exit project. I became absorbed by the study of photography. My new camera, a Nikon D70, never left my neck, and I constantly sought out family and friends as subjects to shoot. I photographed new things that I had never thought about capturing before. During a trip to the Seattle Arboretum, I spent four hours taking photographs of the blooming flowers in early Spring. With each photo I took, I experimented with settings and techniques. Each new picture was a way of documenting my progress as a photographer. I found photography to be art and a way of expressing myself. Photography empowered me to convey feelings and emotions. It changed the way I looked at the world.

I attended Whitman College for my first year of college and worked as the photography editor of The Pioneer, the college newspaper. I was the official sports and website photographer as well as the communications office photographer. I am currently enrolled at Barnard College and work as a photographer for both The Bulletin, a student-run magazine, and the Public Affairs office. I also take photos for Barnard's website and for different clubs around campus.

Personally, I love to shoot photos of people and scenery. Some of my recent photos from New York and Boston can be found at http://eclipse.barnard.edu/~ak2635/photography.html
