building support for South Asian and diasporic writing

Kriti Workshop Application Details

The writing workshop will take place Saturday/Sunday mornings, and we will do our best to accommodate as many participants as possible. There will be no additional charge for those who have purchased an all-festival pass, or the appropriate Saturday/Sunday day pass (once those are available). No prior writing experience is required.

Workshop participants will be expected to submit a short manuscript (no more than 20 pages of typed prose for adults or YA, a brief complete children's picture book, or up to 10 pages of poetry) by Friday, October 28th (to allow two weeks to read and write critiques before the festival). Writers will also be expected to read 2-4 manuscripts from the other participants in their workshop, and be prepared to offer constructive feedback.

Workshop instructors for Kriti 2005 will be:

  • Non-fiction: Minal Hajratwala, Mary Anne Mohanraj
  • Fiction: Abha Dawesar, Mary Anne Mohanraj, Sapna Gupta, Sachin Waikar
  • Children's Literature: Pooja Makhijani, Uma Krishnaswami, Rukhsana Khan, Monika Jain, Sangeeta Mehta
  • Poetry: Minal Hajratwala, Ravi Shankar, Pireeni Sundaralingam
To apply to the workshop, send your name to Sachin Waikar, our workshop coordinator, at svwaikar@hotmail.com. Please note what genre you'd like critiqued (nonfiction, fiction, children's lit., or poetry). If you're interested in multiple genres, rank your choices. And please indicate if you have a preference for a particular day. For example:

  • Name: Raj Kumar
  • Preferred Genre: Poetry (1) or Children's Lit. (2)
  • Preferred Day: No preference [or Saturday, or Sunday]
Sign-up for the workshop will be on a first-come, first-served basis. We're sorry that we won't be able to accommodate requests for specific workshop leaders this year. Thanks for your interest!
