Call for Submissions
Interesting call for submissions from the South Asian Review
South Asian Review, a refereed journal of the South Asian Literary Association, invites submissions for its 2006 Special Topic Issue, Volume 27, Number 1, devoted to Empire and Racial Hybridity. What happened to the racial hybrid in postcolonial theory? In Colonial Desire: Hybridity in Theory, Culture and Race, Robert Young suggests that "the use of hybridity today prompts questions about the ways in which contemporary thinking has broken absolutely with the racialized formulations of the past" (6). Metropolitan discussions of hybridity tend to privilege cultural hybridity as a Bhabhian problematic of colonial representation. Young illuminates the links between cultural theory and nineteenth century writings on race and identity, leaving a sustained examination of the racially hybrid byproduct of empire in South Asia to other scholars. South Asian Review solicits essays that continue this project with a focus on racial hybridity in the South Asian context. This special issue is intended to relocate hybridity in the following ways: within the experience of the "literal" racial hybrid; within the postcolony in order to explore the under-reported local face of hybridity; and within a more expansive framework that juxtaposes contemporary Diaspora with older histories of cultural interactions. Historical and sociological studies are welcome.
SUGGESTED TOPICS: The Racial Hybrid in South Asian Literature/Film; The Anglo-Indian Diaspora; The Burghers of Sri Lanka; Anglo-Indians and the Partition; Theories of Racial Hybridity in South Asia
