The Ghosts of Mrs. Gandhi

I just read a truly briliant essay by Amitav Ghosh, "The Ghosts of Mrs. Gandhi," which, among other things, addresses the questions of whether and how writers should write about complex historical and political issues. That sounds dry, but I promise you, the essay is entirely gripping. It made me cry.

It is so disturbing how people dont even seem to see their victims as such. It is just something that has to be done, it's the distancing themselves from all emotions that is most inhuman, As Amitav Ghosh puts it:

"Outside, some of the young men were jumping up to look through the windows, asking if there were any Sikhs in the bus. There was no anger in their voices; that was the most chilling thing of all."
