Kahani Children's Story Contest

Press Release
Think you’ve got what it takes?! Kahani magazine is seeking
submissions for its First Annual Young Writers
Contest. The theme is up to you, but all stories
must use the words rickshaw, mango and elephant.

"Many of our young readers have said
they want to write for us, so this is their
chance," said Kahani editor Monika Jain. "Based
on the three words we've picked, we should get
some very interesting short stories!"

The Kahani writing contest is open
to all children between the ages of 6-8 and
9-11. Stories can be up to 500 words. The
deadline for all entries is Saturday, December
31, 2005.

Sangeeta Mehta, editor at Little,
Brown Books for Young Readers, a division of the
Time Warner Book Group, will judge the stories
for the Kahani writing contest.

In an interesting twist, Kahani says
that after the winning entries are picked from
the two age groups in January, it will solicit
illustrations from children as part two of the
Kahani contest. “You will get to read the two
winning stories on our Web site,” said Jain,
“and based on that, we want children to send us
illustrations that bring the stories to life."

As the first prize, the winners will
have their stories and artwork published in the
Spring 2006 issue of Kahani. They will also
receive a check of $50 each for their work in
the contest.

"The contest is open to all children, even those
who don't subscribe to Kahani," says magazine
co-founder Leena Chawla. "We want children to
have fun with this. It’s their chance to let
their imagination run free!"

Kahani is a national South Asian
literary magazine for children. The quarterly
publication features original short stories,
articles, reviews and comics all written and
illustrated by South Asian talent. Kahani is
published in Boston.
