Random House to Publish in India
More publishing news from The Subcontinent...
NEW DELHI (AP) -- American publisher Random House will set up an arm in India, home to many internationally acclaimed authors and a growing market, the company said Thursday.
The Indian enterprise will publish mainly in English but will also handle Indian-language editions, according to a company statement.
Random House's main rival on the Indian scene -- market leader Penguin India -- also recently started publishing Indian-language books here.
"The book market in India is developing in exciting ways, and we are expanding our presence there at just the right moment," said Gail Rebuck, chairman and chief executive officer of the United States-based Random House Group. Random House is owned by the German media company Bertelsmann AG.
Indian authors including Arundhati Roy, Amitav Ghosh and others have been receiving an increasing amount of attention in the literary world in recent years.
On a somewhat related note, I am reading The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh right now. I am about eighty pages through and am itching to get out of work so I can read, read, read the rest.
