About Us

DesiLit Magazine, an online journal, is accepting reviews of books, films, short stories, graphic novels, fiction, creative nonfiction, and multimedia experimental forms. We are committed to creating a forum for reviewing exceptional contemporary writing and art focused on South Asia and the diaspora. We welcome submissions from emerging as well as established voices.

What We Want

• Reviews that are powerfully written, thorough and knowledgeable about the conventions and experimentations of the work under review and its genre
• We like reviews with perspective, that set the works they discuss into an appropriate context
• Pieces that introduce their readers to whatever is under review and help them judge for themselves whether they would like to read or view it
• Our favorite review will be nonjudgmental and objective and would certainly not give away key elements of the plot
• Work we publish will help our readers find good writing and other art forms that they otherwise might not get exposure to
• We also prefer reviews that are timely

We are interested in succinct reviews and we feel that a length of about 800 words does justice to the object under review. This approximate length also helps the reviewer be concise and stay to the point. We strongly prefer pieces under 1000 words, but from time to time will consider longer pieces. If you have a project in mind for a long review, we recommend that you run it by us before getting started. Please keep in mind that we pay a flat fee of $20 per piece.

How to Submit

Email reviews to us at reviews@desilit.org pasted in the body of your email and as formatted MS Word documents. In the subject line of your email please use the following subject caption: Reviews Submissions Desilit: Your Review Title. However, replace "Your Review Title" with the title of your review. Also provide your complete contact information and a short bio about yourself (about 100 words) and publishing history if you have any.

We will appreciate meticulously written reviews though we might send them back to you for changes. Edited reviews will be sent to authors for a final review except in the case of standard spelling/grammar editing changes. Simultaneous submissions are fine with us, provided you let us know immediately in case it is being published elsewhere. We will try to acknowledge every submission, but we will surely get in touch with you within two months if we decide to publish your work. All submissions must be original and previously unpublished. All editing and publication decisions are made by a collective editorial board. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis, and the editorial board reserves sole discretion to choose publication date.
